Usually, starting a new relationship is exciting and fun, but for one unfortunate woman, it turned into a nightmare when she discovered that the man she had been dating was her cousin. Reddit user throwRA_0124 took the popular subreddit r/tifu when she made the discovery, and we have all the details right here.

Her Story

She mentioned that she had recently gotten back into the dating scene, writing, “I started talking to this guy, and honestly, the conversation was great, and we got along really, really well. We had a lot of things in common for what we were looking for and just all-around really good vibes.”

She mentioned that the guy lived in a town where part of her family was from, but she didn’t think anything of it. “I’m not super close with them and I’ve never been super close with them growing up,” she said. Anyways, eventually, we took it off the dating app and then we decided to FaceTime and we were on the phone for an hour and then his last name got brought up and sometimes people have the same last name but they’re not related but I just got really quiet and he’s like oh do you know my cousin so-and-so and I’m like oh my gosh in my head.”

She began panicking. “I am just staring into the phone blinking. I told him that I think it’s best that we go to bed and then we should just stop having a conversation. He asked me what my last name was, but I just said I really have to go.”

Finding Him On Facebook

After looking him up on Facebook, she discovered he was one of her cousins, and she immediately blocked his Facebook profile. “[I got] rid of him on the dating app, and I was freaking out so hard because this is so wrong,” she wrote. “The more I thought about it, I was like, technically, I don’t think there’s any blood relation. It’s 100% through marriage but it’s still weird and I’m sad and disappointed but I’m glad that we found this out before anything went anywhere.”

She mentioned that they were supposed to go on a date. “Thank goodness we cleared all that up before we met in person because I simply would’ve [driven] my car off a bridge if anything would’ve happened.”

“I don’t know if he’s actually my cousin because I don’t know how the tiers of cousins work, but somehow, it’s my dad’s sister’s husband’s family. I think it might be his brother’s child. So, while him and I share a cousin, we’re not actually related, I think (I hope),” she said.

The Comments

Her story quickly caught the attention of other Reddit user, and they flocked to the comments to share their opinions. ThisIsWhoIAm78 was not pleased, commenting, “‘Thank God we cleared that up,’ No you didn’t. You freaked, blocked him, and are massively overreacting. Poor [guy] is probably so confused, but honestly, better for him. You don’t sound very mature.”

InevitableRecipe5615 commented, “It was a simple mistake that you caught before any harm was done. Arguably, given that he’s not a blood relation, there’s not much harm that could have been done anyway. This is something that you should laugh off — no need to freak out!”

Zestyclose_Job_8448 said, “It’s not your fault but you might want to explain to him what happened with an apology.”
